This Too Shall Pass

"This too shall pass."

— Persian Adage

Today's Reflection

"This too shall pass" is one of the most comforting phrases in recovery. When we're in the middle of a craving, a difficult emotion, or a challenging situation, it can feel like it will last forever. But nothing lasts forever. Everything passes, eventually.

This reminder helps us ride out difficult moments without reacting impulsively. When we know that what we're feeling is temporary, we can wait it out. We can reach out for support, use our tools, and trust that we'll feel different soon. We don't have to drink over it. We just have to get through it.

The phrase also applies to good times. When things are going well, we remember that life will have ups and downs. We don't take the good for granted, and we don't panic when challenges arise. We stay grounded, knowing that both joy and difficulty are temporary.

Today, when you're struggling, remind yourself: "This too shall pass." Hold on. Reach out. Trust that this moment won't last forever, and neither will the discomfort. You can get through this.

Today's Practice

Today, when I feel overwhelmed by a difficult emotion or craving, I will remind myself: "This too shall pass. I can ride this out without drinking."
