Letting Go of Control

"Let go and let God."

— AA Slogan

Today's Reflection

One of the hardest lessons in recovery is learning to let go of control. As alcoholics, we spent years trying to control everything—our drinking, other people, our circumstances. We thought if we could just control enough variables, everything would work out. But control is an illusion, and the harder we grip, the more slips through our fingers.

Step Three asks us to turn our will and our lives over to the care of our Higher Power. This means releasing our grip, acknowledging that we can't control outcomes, and trusting that we'll be okay anyway. It's terrifying at first, but it's also incredibly freeing.

Letting go doesn't mean giving up. It means focusing on what we can control—our actions, our attitudes, our choices—and releasing what we can't. We can't control other people, we can't control the future, but we can control whether we stay sober today. That's where our power lies.

Today, notice where you're trying to control things that are beyond your control. Practice letting go. Trust that your Higher Power has you, and focus on the one thing you can control: your own recovery.

Today's Practice

Today, when I notice myself trying to control something I can't, I will pause and say: "Let go and let God. I release what I cannot control."
