Progress Not Perfection

"We claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection."

— Big Book, page 60

Today's Reflection

Perfectionism is one of the most destructive forces in recovery. When we demand perfection of ourselves, we set ourselves up for failure and shame. Recovery isn't about becoming perfect—it's about becoming better, one day at a time.

The Big Book reminds us that we "claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection." This means we're focused on growth, not on achieving some impossible standard. We're allowed to make mistakes, to have hard days, to stumble and get back up. That's what progress looks like.

When we let go of perfectionism, we free ourselves from constant self-judgment. We can celebrate the small victories—the meetings we attend, the phone calls we make, the moments we choose differently. Each one is a step forward, even if we can't see the bigger picture yet.

Today, practice self-compassion. You don't have to be perfect to be worthy. You just have to keep showing up, keep trying, and keep moving forward. That's enough. That's everything.

Today's Practice

Today, I will celebrate one area of progress in my recovery, no matter how small. I will remind myself: "Progress, not perfection."
