Service: Giving Back in Recovery

"You can't keep it unless you give it away."

— AA Saying

Today's Reflection

Step Twelve tells us to "carry this message to alcoholics" after having a spiritual awakening. Service work isn't just about helping others—it's essential to our own sobriety. When we give back, we reinforce our own recovery and stay connected to our purpose.

Service can take many forms: sponsoring someone, making coffee at meetings, being a greeter, sharing our story, or simply reaching out to another alcoholic who's struggling. Every act of service, no matter how small, keeps us grounded in gratitude and reminds us of where we came from.

When we're focused on helping others, we're less likely to spiral into self-obsession or self-pity. Service takes us outside of ourselves and connects us to something larger. It gives our sobriety meaning and purpose beyond just not drinking.

Today, look for an opportunity to be of service. It doesn't have to be grand—sometimes the most powerful service is just showing up and letting someone know they're not alone.

Today's Practice

Today, I will perform one act of service in my recovery community—whether it's reaching out to a newcomer, helping set up a meeting, or simply being present for someone who needs support.
