"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."
— Albert Einstein
In AA, we talk about living in the solution instead of the problem. When we were drinking, we were stuck in problem-thinking: everything felt wrong, we saw obstacles everywhere, and we were consumed by negativity. Recovery invites us to shift our focus to solutions.
Living in the solution means taking action instead of dwelling on what's wrong. It means asking "What can I do about this?" instead of "Why is this happening to me?" It means focusing on progress, not perfection, and looking for opportunities to grow rather than reasons to give up.
This doesn't mean ignoring problems or pretending everything is fine. It means choosing to be proactive rather than reactive. When challenges arise, we turn to our tools: we call our sponsor, we go to a meeting, we work the Steps. We stay solution-focused.
Today, notice when you're dwelling in the problem. Then gently redirect yourself to the solution. What action can you take? What resource can you use? How can you move forward?
Today, when I catch myself stuck in problem-thinking, I will pause and ask: "What's one solution-focused action I can take right now?" Then I will take that action.
These daily reflections are here to guide you, but you don't have to walk this path alone. If you or someone you love needs personalized support navigating recovery, I'm here to help.
