"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
— The Serenity Prayer
The Serenity Prayer is more than just words we recite—it's a guide for navigating life's challenges with grace and wisdom. Each line offers profound insight into how we can live with greater peace and purpose.
"Serenity to accept the things I cannot change" reminds us that some battles aren't ours to fight. We cannot control other people, the past, or circumstances beyond our reach. When we accept this truth, we free ourselves from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage the unmanageable.
"Courage to change the things I can" calls us to take responsibility for what is within our power—our attitudes, our actions, our responses. It takes tremendous courage to look honestly at ourselves and make the changes necessary for growth.
"Wisdom to know the difference" is perhaps the most challenging part. It requires us to pause, reflect, and discern what truly needs our energy and what we must release. This wisdom comes through practice, patience, and humility.
Today, I will recite the Serenity Prayer slowly and mindfully, reflecting on each line. I will ask myself: What am I trying to control that I need to accept? What can I change that I've been avoiding?
