"The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it."
— Thích Nhất Hạnh
In active addiction, many of us lived anywhere but the present. We dwelled on past regrets or worried about future consequences. We used substances to escape the now. Recovery invites us back into this moment—the only moment we truly have.
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing our full attention to the present moment without judgment. It's noticing our breath, our body, our thoughts and feelings as they are right now. When we're mindful, we're not replaying yesterday or rehearsing tomorrow—we're simply here.
This practice is especially powerful in recovery because cravings and triggers exist in the past or future, not in this exact moment. Right now, in this breath, you are okay. Right now, you are sober. Right now, you are exactly where you need to be.
Today, practice coming back to the present. When your mind wanders to regret or worry, gently guide it back to now. Feel your feet on the ground. Notice your breathing. Be here.
Today, I will take three mindful breaths whenever I notice myself getting lost in past or future thinking. I will anchor myself in the present moment, where my power and peace reside.
