"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear."
— Franklin D. Roosevelt
Recovery requires tremendous courage. It takes courage to admit we have a problem, courage to ask for help, courage to face the pain we've been numbing, and courage to change our entire way of living. Every day we stay sober is an act of bravery.
Courage doesn't mean we're never afraid. It means we move forward despite our fear. We feel the uncertainty, the doubt, the anxiety—and we choose recovery anyway. That's what makes us warriors in this journey.
Think about all the courageous choices you've already made in your recovery. You've faced truths that were uncomfortable. You've had difficult conversations. You've shown up to meetings even when you didn't feel like it. You've stayed sober through challenges that once would have driven you to drink.
Today, honor your courage. Recognize that simply being here, doing this work, is an act of incredible bravery. And trust that the courage that brought you this far will continue to sustain you.
Today, I will do one thing that scares me in service of my recovery—whether it's sharing at a meeting, having an honest conversation, or facing a situation I've been avoiding. I will act with courage.
