Finding Balance

"Balance is not something you find, it's something you create."
— Jana Kingsford

Recovery asks a lot of us. We need to attend meetings, maintain relationships, take care of our physical health, manage our emotions, and still handle the everyday responsibilities of life. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, pulled in too many directions at once. Finding balance isn't about doing everything perfectly—it's about making intentional choices about where to focus our energy.

Balance looks different for everyone and can shift from day to day. Sometimes it means saying no to commitments that drain us. Other times it means pushing ourselves gently out of our comfort zone. It's a constant practice of checking in with ourselves: What do I need right now? What can wait? Where am I giving too much or not enough?

The goal isn't to achieve perfect equilibrium in every area of life—that's unrealistic. Instead, aim for a sustainable rhythm that supports your recovery and wellbeing. Honor your limits, make space for rest, and remember that taking care of yourself isn't selfish. When you're balanced, you're better able to show up fully for your recovery and for the people who matter to you.

Today's Practice

Assess your life balance

Take inventory of the different areas of your life and honestly assess where you might be overextending or neglecting yourself. Rate each area from 1-10 on how balanced it feels right now.

Physical Health How are you caring for your body?
Mental/Emotional Health Are you processing your feelings?
Relationships Are you connecting meaningfully?
Work/Responsibilities Is your workload sustainable?
Recovery Activities Are you staying engaged?
Rest & Recreation Are you allowing time to recharge?

Next Step: Choose one area where you'd like more balance. What's one small change you could make this week?

Remember: Balance is a moving target. Be gentle with yourself as you adjust.
